Exploring Volume and Design with 3D Printing
Willow Hill - Grade 5, 26 students per year
Christopher Tague
Phase 1: In unit 1 of math, students conceptualize and calculate volume of rectangular prisms. Once students finalize their design of a desktop organizer (sketch, model with connecting cubes, 3D model in tinkercad) we will 3D print the models so the students can use the organizer at their desk.
Phase 2: In unit 2 of science, the students investigate floating and sinking. A big part of the unit is being able to predict an object’s ability to float based on a given volume and mass. Students design boats out of clay and aluminum foil, and now will design a 3D printed boat that would carry the most marbles and fit within different size guidelines.
